About Us

Welcome to Room 1's Blog! We are a lively bunch of new entrants who are embarking on our lifelong learning journey at Hinuera School! Our class grows at different times of the year but we are starting off with three wonderful students! We love sharing our learning so check out all of the fun things we get up to as we transition from Early Childhood education to Primary!

Learning and Growing

Kia Ora Whanau!
Room 1 is a wonderful learning environment where you are welcome to come in to have a look around, play or read with your child.  The students in room 1 love showing their learning to parents and caregivers, so if you have the time please pop in for a few minutes to see their wonderful learning!  We have an open door policy so you are more than welcome to come in at any time!

General Information
The New Zealand Curriculum has five key competencies which underpin learning.  These Key Competencies enable students to contribute to society.  They are thinking, using language symbols and texts, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing.

The first term of school includes a focus on the development of self-management skills.  This introduces our school's values of respect, resilience and responsibility to students. You will see a goals sheet included in your child's portfolio which has an assessment as to how your child is progressing with their self management skills.

Self managers are ready to learn each day.  Here are some of the skills we have been focusing on...

  • I can take my chair down.
  • I can put my shoes on the mat.
  • I can carry my own bag to and from school.
  • I can put my book bag in the box.
  • I can greet my teacher.
  • I can find something quiet to do.

Punctuality

To help your child be organized for the school day, please ensure they are at school by 8.45am.

Clothing

To help your child keep track of their clothing please name all clothing.

Your child also needs a spare change of clothes in their school bags.

Classroom Technology
ICT is integrated into our classroom environment to enhance teaching and learning.  ICT tools are used to help student consolidate learning, extend learning and provide opportunities for students to be creative.  We have six computers, six iPads and an interactive whiteboard which are all regularly used by the teacher and students throughout the day.

Each year we start the year by teaching students about online safety through Hectors World.  For further information please go to the Hectors world website

Class Blog
Please visit our blog as often as you can.  The more you look and contribute the more we seem to blog!  We love to read the comments that you make about our learning!  We try to update the blog as often as we can.

Homework
Daily homework usually starts the second week of school.  Once testing and routines have been completed.  This means that homework is specifically targeted to your child and their needs.  If you need help with anything related to homework please check in the front of your homework book or feel free to contact me.

Physical Education
Students participate in a daily fitness program.  We also have a team sport program where students are taught skills to assist them in playing sports.  This happens once per week.

Parental Involvement
At Hinuera School we are committed to involving our parents/caregivers, as our pupil’s first teachers, to on-going inclusion and participation in our daily programs. Home learning, parent helpers, involvement in class activities and trips – we love to see you there!

We also have an ‘open-door’ policy at school so, please feel welcome to ask questions or discuss any concerns you may have. This can be done informally or by setting an interview time. I aim to be in class 8.30 – 8.55 to greet pupils and see parents if needed.
